The Toyota Hilux saw another win in South Africa in May 2024, improving on its sales despite the national elections putting a damper on vehicle purchases as a whole.
The Japanese bakkie sold a total of 2,367 units – a gain of more than 250 compared to its April figures.
It’s a similar story for the Ford Ranger in second place, which shot up by 143 units to reach 2,216 sales, making it the only other model to clear the 2,000 mark.
The VW Polo Vivo is another firm favourite retaining third rank with 1,817 units, and the Toyota Corolla Cross moved up a spot to achieve fourth with 1,543 new owners.
Fifth place was then taken by the Isuzu D-Max with 1,282 purchases, while the Suzuki Swift saw a considerable drop of nearly 500 sales and shifted from the fourth to sixth position with 1,239 units.
The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, Hyundai Grand i10 and Toyota Starlet, were all very close together with 1,101; 1,072 and 1,047 units to take the seventh, eighth and ninth spots, respectively. The VW Polo then rounded out the top 10 with 888 sales.
As for the top 20, the Nissan Magnite, Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra Pik Up, Suzuki Baleno and Haval Jolion all sold between 774 and 572 new models and placed 11th to 15th.
The final five then consist of the Suzuki Fronx (474), Toyota Land Cruiser 79 (459), and VW T-Cross (451), as well as the Nissan Navara and Toyota Vitz which tied with 423 units each.
Models that were in the top 20 last month but failed to make the cut this time around include the Toyota Hiace, Renault Triber, Hyundai i20, and Chery Tiggo 7 Pro.
Taking a holistic look at May’s car sales, the top 20 accounted for 20,205 buyers, or 54% of the 37,105 vehicles shipped that month.
