5 important things that happened in South Africa’s car industry this week

These were the five biggest stories in South Africa’s transport industry this week.

Official petrol price cuts for June announced

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has announced the official fuel price adjustments for June.

Motorists welcomed an appreciable cut of at least R1.09 per litre to both the cost of petrol and diesel.

The reductions are attributed to an improvement in the US dollar/rand exchange rate and the international oil price.

How government plans to collect your e-toll debt

The Gauteng provincial government is currently investigating methods to track down the funds from motorists’ outstanding e-toll bills.

Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga has repeatedly stated that road users will be required to settle their accounts for the shut-down tolling project.

It is possible that a person’s e-toll debt will be linked to their credit rating, making it harder for defaulters to apply for services.

New Toyota Prado launched in South Africa

Toyota has officially launched the new Prado in South Africa at a starting price of R1,296,300.

The adventure SUV is now available in three specifications, including a limited “First Edition” model.

All three models provide generous levels of kit and are powered by Toyota’s familiar 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine.

Hijackers in South Africa are targeting these vehicles – And they’re not Toyota or VW

Hijackers in South Africa are increasingly targeting commercial vehicles for the goods they carry.

The surge in criminal activity is attributed to the widespread use of online commerce and deliveries since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Security company Tracker notes that business-owned vehicles are 56% more likely to be a target for hijackers than private ones.

New VWs coming to South Africa

Two new VW SUVs are expected to land in South Africa in the third quarter of 2024 after they missed their initial launch deadline.

The first is updated Touareg which is positioned as VW’s flagship SUV, and the second is the next-generation Tiguan.

Both models were initially set to launch before June but were unfortunately delayed.
