Toyota has finally revealed the pricing of the hotly anticipated next-generation Prado.
Arguably the biggest launch of the year for South Africa’s best-selling carmaker, the SUV was supposed to touch down in April but was delayed by homologation processes.
The Prado is now scheduled to appear in showrooms this June in four specifications, and prices will start at R1,296,300.
Engine
The Adventure SUV is initially being sold in two guises – TX and VX-R – with a limited “First Edition” (FE) option for the first buyers.
All of these units are powered by Toyota’s familiar 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine, as the 4.0-litre petrol block has been dropped from the range.
The 2.8-litre plant produces 150kW and 500Nm, which is transmitted to a permanent all-wheel-drive system via a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
This replaces the old six-speed box on the last-gen units, though the SUV ends up with the same average fuel consumption of 7.9l/100km.
The Prado is built on the same TNGA-F platform as the Land Cruiser 300 and subsequently measures 4,925mm in length, 1,980mm in width, and 1,935mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,850mm, and ground clearance comes in at 216mm.
Furthermore, the Toyota’s approach and departure angles clock in at 30.0 degrees and 17.0 degrees, respectively.
Crawl Control (off-road cruise control) and a centre differential lock are standard on all models, but the Multi-Terrain Select function and another rear diff lock are reserved for the VX-R and First Edition.
Every derivative is certified to tow up to 3,500kg and comes with trailer sway control for added stability.
Features
As you’d expect, the premium Prado is well-equipped, as the base TX comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights and daytime running lights, keyless entry and start, leather upholstery, an electronically adjustable driver’s chair, heated and ventilated front seats with lumbar support, a multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display, an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six speakers, rear 12V sockets, and a powered tailgate.
This is in addition to safety and assistance items comprising tyre-pressure monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, hill descent control, traction control, brake assist, vehicle stability control, and lane-trace assist.
Buyers who pick up the VX-R can also expect adaptive high beams, an electric front passenger seat, a digital rearview mirror, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated seats for the second row, electronically folding third-row seats, a refrigerated storage bin, a moonroof, 10 speakers, a wireless charger, and two 12.3-inch screens for the driver and media systems.
As for the FE variants, they share the same specs as the VX-R but also benefit from circular “heritage” headlights, unique mud flaps, roof rails, a two-tone interior, and First Edition badges on the front fenders to give them an exclusive look.
The standard Prado is available with six colour schemes, including Glacier White, Avant-Garde Bronze Metallic, Smokey Grey, Platinum Pearl White, Raven Black, and Attitude Black.
The FE units, on the other hand, have three main options – Platinum Pearl White, Avant-Garde Bronze Metallic, and Sand – the last of which can be paired with a white roof as a special Bi-Tone paint scheme.
