The new Toyota Prado is finally here and ready to take on the heavy hitters of the 4×4 world.
The adventure SUV is available in three specifications with prices ranging from R1,296,300 to R1,462,400.
For the drivetrain, you can expect a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine which produces 150kW and 500Nm, which connects to a permanent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.
Gear changes are handled by an eight-speed automatic shifter, which results in an average fuel consumption of 7.9l/100km.
Regarding its off-road attributes, the Prado has a wheelbase measuring 2,850mm and a ground clearance of 216mm.
It also has an approach angle of 30.0 degrees, and a departure angle of 17.0 degrees.
Furthermore, the Toyota comes standard with a rear diff lock, though only the VX-R has access to a central diff lock and a Multi-Terrain Select function.
It is capable of towing 3,500kg – a process that is made easier by the addition of a trailer sway control function.
Equipment found on all trim levels of the new Prado comprises automatic LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, leather upholstery, an electronically adjustable driver’s chair, heated and ventilated front seats with lumbar support, a multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, and 12V sockets.
The dashboard features a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display alongside an 8.0-inch infotainment monitor with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and six speakers.
Each model also comes with tyre-pressure monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, hill descent control, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, traction control, brake assist, lane-keep assist, and vehicle stability control.
The range-topping VX-R units then complete the spec sheet with an electric front passenger seat, a digital rearview mirror, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated second-row chairs, electronically folding third-row seats, a refrigerated storage bin, 10 speakers, a wireless charger, and moonroof.
The two screens on the dash are upgraded to 12.3 inches in size, too.
Also worth noting is the special First Edition series, which adds to the VX-R’s brochure with unique circular headlamps, mud flaps, roof rails, badges, and a two-tone exterior for added flair.
The Toyota Prado is sold with a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 9-service/90,000km service plan.
