New BMW 2 Series unveiled – South African launch date

The updated BMW 2 Series Coupe has been revealed, showing off a new design, an expanded equipment sheet, and five different engines.

The automaker has confirmed that the sporty coupe will land on local soil in the last quarter of 2024 alongside its high-octane sibling, the new M2, as well as several other BMW vehicles.

What to expect

Design-wise, the new 2 Series features a long bonnet with a power dome, individual round headlights, wide wheel arches, and a short boot lid that ends in an air scoop.

The M Sport package is now included as standard, adding extra-large air intakes to the front, side skirts, and a rear apron with vertical reflectors and a diffuser-like insert.

The brand’s signature kidney grille now has a pearlescent chrome finish, while the side skirts and rear apron are body-coloured rather than black.

On the M240i xDrive units, you can expect even more M-specific additions like gloss black inserts for the side air intakes and wing mirrors, a black spoiler lip on the front apron, and trapezoidal tailpipes.

There are two solid and seven metallic paint colours to choose from, including a Zandvoort Blue scheme that’s exclusive to the M240i.

Likewise, the standard models are fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels while the M-badged units have 19-inch, double-spoke rims with a bi-colour finish.

Shifting to the interior, you’ll find a high centre console and an anthracite headlining courtesy of the M Sport package.

Sitting on the dashboard is a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.9-inch infotainment unit running on the automaker’s new Operating System 8.5.

This system comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BMW Maps navigation, and an Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The number of buttons in the front fascia has also been reduced with many functions, including the seat heating and climate controls, now being operable using the touchscreen or voice prompts.

Other widgets can be selected from a shortcut bar, and owners can supplement the user experience with a heads-up display showing real-time information like directional arrows.

All variants of the updated BMW now come with an M leather steering wheel with a flat bottom, a red 12 o’clock marker, and a contrast stitch pattern.

Also included are heated Sports seats with electric adjustment, though these can be swapped for M bucket seats with integrated headrests and better lumbar support.

The standard upholstery is made from M Performtex, a velour-like sustainable material that saves on weight. Alternatively, you can pick perforated Sensatec covers in a black-and-cognac design or a Tacora Red theme with a quilted pattern, or Vernasca leather with red accents.

Other parts of the cabin have an anthracite and aluminium finish, but this can be substituted for wood or an M Carbon Fibre appearance.

Helpful items on the coupe include a Parking Assistant with front and rear sensors, front-collision warning, lane-departure warning, cruise control with a braking function, and a speed limiter with traffic sign recognition.

Optional equipment comprises adaptive cruise control, adaptive headlights with high-beam assist, a Harman Kardon stereo, an electric sunroof, a tow bar, and a wireless charger.

Getting to the performance side of things, the new 2 Series features a grand total of five powertrains – four petrol and one diesel.

The entry-level 218i is equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that generates 115kW and averages 6.5l/100km while being able to accelerate to 100km/h in 8.7 seconds.

The 2.0l 220i boasts a greater output of 135kW, which lets it accelerate in 7.5 seconds while consuming 6.4l/100km.

After this is the 2.0l 230i, capable of generating 180kW while rocketing to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds with a fuel stat of 6.6l/100km.

Next up is the 220d 2.0l turbo-diesel powerplant with 140kW, which can still pull off respectable a 0-100km/h time of 6.9 seconds.

Naturally, it has the lowest consumption of the group at 4.9l/100km, but this is also due in part to the inclusion of 48V mild-hybrid technology with an integrated starter motor producing 8kW.

Finally, there’s the range-topping 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder petrol engine found in the M240i that puts out 275kW to all four wheels via an intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system, making it the clear winner in a drag race with its time of 4.3 seconds.

Every iteration of the BMW 2 Series is fitted with an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox, which can be operated via paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

This transmission features a Sprint function where the driver can hold down the left paddle to force the car into the lowest available gear.

All of the four-cylinder models now come with M Sport suspension, while the M240i can be optionally fitted with an Adaptive M chassis with variable sport steering and electronically controlled shock absorbers.

The M-badged units also make use of a sport differential and an M Sport braking system.
