South Africans in the market for the new Haval Jolion Pro will need to earn at least R44,000 per month to afford one on a finance plan, according to a calculation by TopAuto.
The new Pro range was introduced in late June and sits above the standard Jolion models, with five derivatives costing between R391,150 and R516,950.
There are three different 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engines to choose from, including a range-topping hybrid (HEV) option.
The lower-tier units generate 105kW and 210Nm, which is sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox, resulting in an average consumption of 8.1l/100km.
Buyers can also go for the more powerful Jolion Pro S, which has access to 130kW and 270Nm, but still has a lower consumption of 7.5l/100km.
As for the HEV, it pumps out a total of 140kW and 375Nm and uses a “Dedicated Hybrid Transmission,” helping it achieve a fuel spend of 5.1l/100km.
Every Jolion Pro comes with a minimum of 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, keyless entry and start, a multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, climate control, a 3.5-inch driver’s display, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a reverse camera, four speakers, cruise control, rear parking sensors, and hill assist.
Expanding on this, the mid-spec models bring LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane-keep assist, a panoramic sunroof, Eco-leather seats, an electric driver’s seat, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch central touchscreen, and six speakers.
At the top end of the scale, you’ll also get a heads-up display, a wireless charger, heated and ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera, front parking sensors, blind-spot detection, and a parking assistant.
Each purchase of the Haval comes with a 7-year/200,000km warranty, a 5-year/75,000km service plan, and 7-year/unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance, with an additional 8-year/150,000km battery warranty on the hybrid.
What you need to earn
We can use the following formula to work out the monthly payments on the new Haval:
- Car price – R391,150/R516,950
- Payment term – 60 terms (5 years)
- Interest – 11.75%
- Deposit – 0%
- Balloon – No balloon payment
- Extras – No optional extras
According to this, you’ll need to pay at least R8,747 per month to purchase the base Jolion Pro, or up to R11,530 per month for the HEV.
Financial experts then recommend that you do not spend more than 20% of your gross monthly salary on vehicle payments.
This means you’ll need to earn between R43,735 per month and R57,650 per month to afford a Jolion Pro on a finance plan in South Africa.
Note that this figure does not account for insurance, fuel, and maintenance, which must all be factored into your budget.
