Every new bakkie coming to South Africa in the next 6 months

There are at least eight new bakkies are scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the next six months, with more potentially in the works.

The country has already welcomed several new models in the first half of 2024, including additions to the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max rosters.

It also saw the introduction of new brands from China such as LDV and Foton, which launched the T60 and Tunland G7, respectively.

Of course, there’s still plenty more to come, as GWM, JAC, Jeep, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, and VW all have a bakkie in store for us before the year is out.

Starting with the Chinese brands, GWM is bringing out the P500 – a new flagship model for the popular P-Series.

JAC, meanwhile, is gearing up to launch the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric (BEV) versions of its range-topping T9 double cab.

This will be the second all-electric bakkie in South Africa after the Maxus T90, though crucially the JAC will be aimed at private customers as the Maxus is intended for use in commercial fleets.

The automaker also plans to launch a single-cab version of its entry-level T6, and an automatic gearbox for the T8, though the latter is only arriving next year.

Jeep, meanwhile, is rolling out the facelifted Gladiator soon, and Peugeot is planning to introduce a new single-cab and lower-spec double-cab version of the Landtrek to widen its appeal.

From VW’s side, the Amarok is getting a new petrol powerplant in response to customer demand, taking the form of a 2.3-litre block with 222kW and 452Nm.

Nissan is also gearing up to introduce a new entry-level version of the current-gen Navara, though it’s possible South Africa may also get the new flagship Navara Warrior in the near future.

Finally, there’s the next-gen Mitsubishi Triton, which will be equipped with a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel drivetrain.

There are also a number of bakkies that are confirmed for South Africa, but have either not been given a release date or are expected to arrive in 2025.

This includes the BYD Shark PHEVKia Tasman, and two new Fotons – the upmarket G9 and V9.

New contenders

These are all of the bakkies that are confirmed to be coming to South Africa this year.

Keep in mind that their introduction dates are preliminary and could be delayed at a moment’s notice due to factors such as an unfavourable exchange rate, supply chain issues, port congestion, and more.
