Best-selling used cars in South Africa in 2024 – Pricing and mileage

The Ford Ranger is the most popular used car in South Africa by a considerable margin.

This is according to data from AutoTrader, which recently published its Mid Year Car Industry Report documenting all of the sales that occurred in the first half of 2024.

Between January and June, a total of 9,669 pre-owned Rangers were sold, giving the Blue Oval a solid lead of 1,194 units over the runner-up, the Toyota Hilux, with its still-impressive 8,475 purchases.

The VW Polo, which came in third, can therefore claim to be the country’s favourite used passenger vehicle, selling 7,314 units in six months.

Its more affordable sibling, the Polo Vivo, wasn’t far behind in fourth with 5,794 customers.

The Toyota Fortuner, meanwhile, is the most sought-after SUV, landing in fifth with 4,141 success stories, and it is tailed by two premium German sedans, none other than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the BMW 3 Series.

Consumers evidently have a preference for the three-pointed star, as Merc sold 3,430 examples compared to BMW’s 2,919 over the course of the first half of 2024.

The Suzuki Swift and Kia Picanto were popular choices for those looking for a budget hatch, as dealerships parted with 2,867 and 2,433 units, respectively.

Finally, there’s the Nissan NP200 bakkie, which has enjoyed great success in the second-hand space this year following its discontinuation in April, with motorists laying claim to 2,406 workhorses so far in 2024.
