Best-selling bakkies in South Africa

The Toyota Hilux had another great month in South Africa in September 2024, with sales showing a month-on-month growth from 2,527 to 2,942 units.

This gave the Hilux a comfortable lead as the country’s number one bakkie, though its biggest rival – the Ford Ranger – also had a good turnout with 2,382 customers compared to 2,312 in August.

Meanwhile, the Isuzu D-Max saw a small dip, going from 1,634 to 1,592 units, though this is still far ahead of the other competitors as the top three were the only models to sell more than 1,000 examples.

Outside this group, the Mahindra Pik Up virtually matched its numbers from August with 782 sales, and the Nissan Navara still sits in fifth place with 451 purchases.

The GWM P-Series, on the other hand, saw a big jump from 205 to 350 sales, no doubt helped by the recent launch of the new P500.

This was enough to take the Chinese carmaker from eighth to sixth place, while VW shifted down to seventh with the Amarok moving 325 units.

Next is the Toyota Land Cruiser with 168 units, which was followed by the GWM Steed with 113.

Last up is the Nissan NP200, which has gradually fallen down the chart over the course of 2024 since its cancellation in April.

Excess stock meant that the popular pickup was able to remain in the top 10 far longer than expected for a discontinued model, but this surplus appears to be nearly empty as the NP200 only found 76 customers last month.

The top 10 bakkies accounted for 9,181 units in September 2024, or 84.1% of the 10,914 light commercial vehicles sold in South Africa.
