The most fuel-efficient hatchback in South Africa – That isn’t a hybrid
The Suzuki Celerio and its rebadged twin – the Toyota Vitz – are the most fuel-efficient hatchbacks in South Africa that don’t rely on hybrid technology for help.
While hybrids can be a great way to drastically lower fuel consumption, they typically come at a substantial premium compared to other vehicles, making them inaccessible to the majority of motorists.
Furthermore, since the electric underpinnings add a substantial amount to a hybrid’s price tag, it can actually take several thousand kilometres of driving before the money you save on fuel will make up the difference in what you paid for the car in the first place, meaning they are a long-term investment if you are primarily concerned about cutting costs.
The Celerio and Vitz do not have this problem, as they achieve an impressively low consumption while also being two of the cheapest autos in the country, making them a good choice for budget-conscious motorists.
Low-cost travels
The Suzuki and Toyota are powered by a 1.0-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine which produces a modest 49kW and 89Nm.
If you want to maximize your fuel savings, you’ll want to pick up the top-spec Celerio GL and Vitz XR, as these are fitted with a five-speed automated manual transmission.
This gearbox, which sends power down to the front wheels, leads to a manufacturer-claimed average fuel consumption of just 4.2l/100km.
If you grab the versions with a five-speed manual shifter, you’ll see a slightly higher 4.4l/100km.
Assuming you go for the most frugal option possible, the hatchbacks will be able to travel for an impressive 762km on their small 32-litre tanks.
To put this in context, petrol 93 is currently trading for a minimum of R20.22 per litre as of November 2024, meaning you are only paying R647.04 for a full tank.
That works out to a phenomenal fuel spend of just 84c per kilometre, which was made possible without any hybrid assistance.
As for their cost, you’ll need to spend between R188,900 and R225,900 to pick up the Celerio, while the Vitz goes for between R189,900 and R239,900.
At a minimum, both cars are equipped with halogen headlights, 14-inch steel wheels, a full-sized spare wheel, a multifunction steering wheel, rear park distance control, fabric upholstery, manual air conditioning, two speakers, and ABS.
The higher-spec GL and XR units then feature 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, electric side mirrors, remote central locking, electric windows, a USB port, four speakers, and a 7-inch infotainment screen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
