Replacement part availability is one thing many South African consumers forget about when they buy a car, whether it be brand new or new to you.
This has become especially relevant in modern times with the influx of new automakers flooding the market, many of which do not yet have sprawling dealer networks that can offer dependable after-sales support.
“While consumers naturally consider price and features when buying a car, the ease with which parts can be sourced plays a significant role in the vehicle’s long-term viability,” said Juan Hanekom, National Director of the South African Motor Body Repairers’ Association (Sambra).
“In the event of repairs, whether due to collision or mechanical issues, efficient parts availability can make all the difference in ensuring timely and high-quality restorations.”
Don’t pray for parts
A workshop’s ability to adequately repair vehicles hinges equally as much on the skill of the technicians as it does on the ease of access to parts that meet Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) standards.
Being able to easily get OEM or equivalent components is essential to prompt repairs and lower service costs, while ensuring both safety and vehicle performance remain uncompromised.
“The strength of a brand’s parts supply chain has a direct impact on the ability of repairers to restore vehicles to safe, reliable condition quickly,” said Hanekom.
“Brands that prioritise robust supply chains are supporting not only their customers, but also the repair industry that maintains their vehicles.”
It’s thus worth seeking out automakers with robust global supplys chain that has stood the test of time, as it will be able to weather any storms better than a vehicle brand with expertise in limited markets.
“As we’ve seen, brands with diversified suppliers and strong logistical frameworks have weathered disruptions better, allowing motor body repairers to service clients efficiently,” said Hanekom.
“This kind of resilience in a brand’s supply chain adds real value to vehicle ownership in South Africa.”
Another thing to keep in mind is that reliable part availability not only affects immediate repair times but also influences long-term resale value.
Vehicles that have been properly maintained with high-quality parts tend to sell for more than those that were not looked after very well.
Additionally, cars with ample aftermarket support are more likely to retain their value as the new owner will be able to sort out issues that arise with relative ease, instead of having to dig through scrapyards in hopes of finding that one piece or wait months for an expensive overseas shipment to arrive.
“In a vehicle’s lifetime, it’s not just the price tag or performance that matters—it’s also the support it receives through high-quality repairs,” concludes Hanekom.
“A dependable supply chain keeps vehicles safely on the road and helps ensure that owners receive the service and support they deserve. This is especially crucial for those investing in long-term vehicle ownership.”
