Land Rover unveils new Defender bakkie that can change colours – Photos

Jaguar Land Rover has taken the covers off the new Classic Defender V8 family, a selection of four Defender models commissioned by a single client.

The quartet comprises a Land Rover Defender 90 Station Wagon, 90 Soft Top, 110 Station Wagon, and the newly introduced 110 Double Cab Pickup.

One of the most notable attributes about the series is its Spectral Green paint finish, which can seamlessly transition between green, purple, and gold, depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions.

This paint has even been applied to the diamond-turned 18-inch “Sawtooth” alloy wheels, exterior badging, and central interior fascia panels.

The company stated that each vehicle has spent close to 400 hours at the Land Rover Classic in-house paint facility, as the process involves meticulous surface preparation, colour matching, and a final polish.

In addition to the unique paint scheme, each car has a contrasting Icy White roof and expedition cage, Defender bonnet script, and hand-painted white coachlines.

Inside, the seats are wrapped in semi-aniline Bridge of Weir Vanilla leather, complemented with green contrast stitching meant to match the exterior.

The upmarket vehicles also have Superwool carpets with the same Bridge of Weir leather trim, and the floor mats have debossed Defender wordmarks.

“The single-client commission represents the near-infinite customisation possibilities that Land Rover Classic offers clients via its Works Bespoke service, including the option to specify a colour inspired from any source, including personal items, natural landscapes or other vehicles in their collection,” said the automaker.

Other features on the Land Rover Classic include a 9-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a DAB/DAB+ Digital Radio, Bluetooth, and a 13-band graphic equaliser.

An optional rearview camera can also be discreetly installed in the rear bumper.

Powering the 4x4s is a remastered V8 engine taken from the original 2012-2016 Defender, which has been uprated to produce 298kW.

“This spectacular Works Bespoke commission demonstrates the breadth of Land Rover Classic’s customisation capabilities – the result of a collaborative creative process that engages our clients with our in-house design, engineering and craftspeople to bring their vision to life. An authentic Classic Defender V8 (or four, in this case), hand-built and remastered by the original manufacturer,” said Dominic Elms, Director at Land Rover Classic.
