What South African Toyota Fortuner owners earn

South Africans spent at least R614 million on the Toyota Fortuner last month, though the actual figure is sure to be much higher than this.

The Fortuner is one of the country’s best-selling SUVs, having sent a total of 905 units off the showroom floor in October 2024.

While that may not be as high as something like the Corolla Cross’s 2,104 units, it’s important to remember that the Fortuner is quite an expensive model these days, asking for a minimum payment of R679,100 all the way up to R961,800 for the flagship VX 4×4.

This means that motorists collectively spent anywhere from R614 million to R870 million on the Adventure SUV in a single month, which begs the question of how much a person needs to earn to afford such a vehicle in the first place.

What a Toyota Fortuner driver earns in South Africa

Assuming that a typical Fortuner household opts for a finance plan to pay for their new wheels, we can use the following formula to work out the salary one would need if they were to follow the guidelines set by financial institutions.

  • Car price – R679,100/R961,800
  • Payment term – 60 terms (5 years)
  • Interest – 11.25%
  • Deposit – 0%
  • Balloon – No balloon payment
  • Extras – No optional extras

According to this, individuals need to commit at least R14,945 per month for the base model, or up to R21,127 per month for the VX 4×4.

This is not the full story though, as financial experts recommend that you do not spend more than 20% of your gross monthly salary on vehicle payments.

This means a household should have a net income of anywhere from R74,725 per month to R105,635 per month to comfortably afford the Toyota if they plan on using a finance solution.

What a Toyota Fortuner offers in 2024

The Fortuner is sold with one of two engines – either a 2.4 or 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel plant.

The 2.4-litre units produce 110kW and 4000Nm, while the larger 2.8-litre mill generates 150kW and 500Nm.

All of the models feature a six-speed automatic gearbox with the exception of the cheapest unit, which is fitted with a six-speed manual stick.

Regardless of which engine you go for, the Toyota is available with either a rear-wheel or four-wheel-drive layout, making it a popular choice for off-road enthusiasts.

Standard equipment on the SUV includes keyless start and entry, partial leather upholstery, cruise control, manual air conditioning, hill assist, a reverse camera, front and rear park distance control, a multi-information driver display, an 8-inch infotainment console with smartphone pairing and six speakers, and Eco and Sport driving modes.

The higher-spec VX models also come with automatic dual-zone climate control, electronically adjustable front seats, an 11-speaker JBL sound system, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, a 360-degree camera system, and adaptive cruise control.
