10 bakkies South Africans can’t get enough of

South Africa’s ferocious appetite for bakkies is clearly going away anytime soon if the sales numbers from 2024 are anything to go by.

It was another great year for the nation’s favourites, with the Toyota Hilux cleaning house with a staggering 32,656 showroom victories.

The Ford Ranger put up a good show, too, with 25,553 units all finding new homes within the past 12 months.

Third place naturally went to the Isuzu D-Max with its own impressive stat of 18,973 transactions, which means the “big three” of the local bakkie scene are still comfortably in their podium spots.

Fourth place, meanwhile, was taken by the Mahindra Pik up with 8,336 sales – an excellent sum to be sure – but it proves just how far ahead the other players are with a lead of over 10,000 units.

The biggest surprise of the year has to be the Nissan NP200, which was discontinued in April yet still managed to bag fifth place with 6,544 purchases.

It goes to show how popular the compact pickup really was, considering four months of sales was enough beat out an additional eight months from several other brands.

Speaking of, the larger Nissan Navara placed behind its stable partner with 4,874 units, followed by the VW Amarok with 3,957 sales.

The GWM P-Series then took the eighth spot with 3,659 customers, and the niche Toyota Land Cruiser 79 squeezed into ninth even with its high starting price.

Finally, the last spot in the top 10 was taken by the entry-level GWM Steed and its 1,197 units.

In total, South Africa’s 10 favourite bakkies accounted for a combined 109,208 sales, with the Hilux representing just under a third of this exclusive club.
