Best-selling bakkies in South Africa

January was a decent month for bakkie sales in South Africa, with a few models improving on their figures while other saw a small decrease.

The Toyota Hilux is still the number one pick for motorists, though its sales dropped from 2,962 to 2,557 between December and January.

Similarly, the Ford Ranger saw a drop from 1,924 to 1,858 units last month, though this was still enough to secure it the second spot.

In contrast, the Isuzu D-Max recorded a great performance, with sales jumping from 1,086 to 1,413 units over the same period, easily landing it in third place.

Just as impressive was the Mahindra Pik Up, which leapt from 390 to 801 purchases, and the Toyota Land Cruiser, which improved on its monthly figures by 208 sales to reach a total of 560.

Outside the top five, the Nissan Navara moved up to sixth with 298 buyers, while the VW Amarok dropped to seventh with 245 sales.

The GWM P-Series managed to hold on to eighth place, though its sales have dropped to just 101 units – likely a consequence of reduced stock and lower consumer interest while the carmaker prepares for the launch of the facelifted models later this year.

The next-gen Mitsubishi Triton added another 75 units to the tally, and the GWM Steed rounded out the top 10 with 74 customers.

In total, the top 10 bakkies represented a combined 7,982 units, or 17.2% of all 46,398 new vehicles sold in South Africa in January.
