Best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa

January was a fantastic start to the year for South Africa’s favourite hatchbacks, with many reporting a considerable jump in sales.

The standout model was the Suzuki Swift, which achieved an incredible milestone by taking the Toyota Hilux’s crown as the nation’s best-selling vehicle.

This also put it well ahead of other popular passenger cars like the Toyota Corolla Cross, as the Swift sold a staggering 2,628 units in January.

Other hatchbacks did just as well, with second place going to the VW Polo Vivo with 2,549 sales to its name, while the Toyota Starlet came in third with 2,180.

Fourth place was taken by the Hyundai Grand i10 with 1,212 buyers, and the Toyota Vitz jumped from seventh to fifth with 825 showroom victories.

The VW Polo in sixth sold 754 units, and the Renault Kwid saw a remarkable spike in popularity that took it from 10th to seventh place with 477 customers.

The Suzuki Baleno, on the other hand, dropped from sixth to eighth with 407 sales, and the Hyundai i20 and Suzuki Celerio followed suit with 336 units and 330 units, respectively.

In total, the top 10 best-selling hatchbacks accounted for a whopping 11,697 purchases, or 25.2% of the 46,398 cars sold in South Africa last month.
