Hatchbacks are still a very popular car segment in South Africa, as evidenced by the new sales data for February 2025.
The Suzuki Swift continues to dominate the charts as the nation’s best-selling passenger car with an impressive 2,351 units, only coming second to the Toyota Hilux bakkie.
Right on its tail was the affordable VW Polo Vivo, which also managed to break past the 2k mark with 2,187 customers.
The third most-popular hatch, the Toyota Starlet, had nearly half the sales of the Vivo at 1,279 units, though this is still an excellent figure by any standard.
The Starlet was in its own close race with the Hyundai Grand i10, which came in fourth with 1,253 purchases.
The last model to crack the top five was the VW Polo, which remains a popular choice with 832 people picking one up last month.
Next up are the Renault Kwid and Toyota Vitz, which sold a total of 750 and 551 units, respectively.
The Suzuki Baleno then came in eighth with 360 sales, shortly followed by the Hyundai i20 with its 317 sales.
Last up is the entry-level Suzuki S-Presso, which rounded out the top 10 with 267 examples finding a home in February.
Overall, the top 10 hatchbacks accounted for a combined 10,147 sales, representing 21.1% of all the cars sold in South Africa last month.

Note that the Hyundai Grand i10 is sold in both hatchback and sedan formats, but Hyundai does not report body-specific sales figures.
