The most expensive motorbike you can buy in South Africa

The BMW M1000 RR is the most expensive motorcycle you can currently purchase as a normal consumer in South Africa.

The superbike goes for the pretty sum of R711,400, rivaling premium hatchbacks such as the all-new BMW 1 Series.

Unlike its sibling, though, the M1000 RR is the crème de la crème of BMW’s Motorrad division.

A World Superbike Championship bike that just so happens to wear a numberplate at the back, the two-wheeler is the closest thing you can get to the pinnacle of motorcycling for the road.

It’s powered by a monster of a four-stroke, four-cylinder, 999cc engine with innovative technologies such as titanium valves and BMW Shiftcam variable intake camshaft control.

The potent power unit is good for a generous 160kW and revs to a glorious 15,100rpm, putting hot hatchbacks like the VW Polo GTI to shame with its measly 147kW.

The generous power-to-weight ratio for the M1000 RR sees the superbike sprint to 100km/h in 3.1 seconds and continue to a maximum of 314km/h, provided its rider has enough cojones to pull it off.

It features an M short-stroke throttle with a 58-degree totation angle that responds even more directly to every command than before.

This is on top of “Pro” riding modes including “Race Pro” and two more combinations of throttle response and engine torque.

The Engine Brake and Hill Start Control Pro functions, as well as Dynamic Brake Control, are also new.

The traction control programme has been revised, too, delivering a noticeable improvement in comparison to its predecessor, especially in Race mode for track days.

To bring the Double-R back to reasonable speeds, it features the five-level-adjustable ABS Pro braking system with a new “Slick” setting.

It also boasts a Brake Slide Assist function that enables braking drifts via a steering angle sensor.

Finally, the BMW pleases bystanders with a titanium exhaust system with modified cylinder head flanges, oval header inlets, and modified pre-silencer.

Ultimate aerodynamics

To tame the beast, the M1000 RR receives one of the most outrageous aero kits on the two-wheeler market.

At the front, it sports innovative dual-flow LED headlights derived from the track-going models, and the vaunted BMW M logo in the air intake between the headlights.

Flanking the lighting fixtures are aggressive new carbon fibre winglets that provide increased downforce versus your standard sports bike.

It also wears exclusive fairings designating it as the leader of the BMW Motorrad pack.

The M1000 R is available as a base variant in the color scheme Lightwhite uni/M Motorsport and in the new color White Aluminium metallic matt.

In the M Competition equipment variant, this paint is also available alongside the color scheme Blackstorm metallic/M Motorsport.

In all color schemes, the rear frame and swingarm of the new model year are in Platinum Grey metallic.

The winglets are finished in black textured paint, and the covers for the clutch and generator are also coated in black.
