New BMW 1 Series officially launched in South Africa – Pricing and specifications

The new BMW 1 Series has finally landed in South African showrooms after quite the long wait.

The hatchback is available in three individual specifications, with prices starting at R713,395.

It launches alongside its sedan sibling, the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

What you get

Two engine options can be found in the new 1 Series range, depending on the selected model.

The base entry is the 118, which sees a 1.5-litre, turbo-petrol block under the bonnet that is good for 115kW and 230Nm.

This lends the premium city car a 0-100km/h time of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 226km/h. It also boasts a relatively frugal fuel usage of 6.4l/100km.

The more potent M135 hot hatch makes do with a turbocharged 2.0-litre plant which churns out 233kW and 400Nm.

It races to 100km/h in a brisk 4.9 seconds before topping out at 250km/h, and its consumption naturally comes in at a higher 7.8l/100km.

Both engines are paired with a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox with paddle shifters.

The 118 is exclusively front-wheel drive, whereas the M135 features the brand’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The M135 also gets adaptive suspension as standard which is only available on the 118 with the optional M Sport package.

Standard kit on the new 118 encompasses automatic LED lights with vertical daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, leather-free upholstery, and a new Sports multifunction steering wheel.

Atop the dashboard now sits a curved 10.25-inch digital driver display and a 10.7-inch infotainment monitor.

The screens are running on the latest BMW Operating System 9 and offer voice commands, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, BMW Maps with cloud-based navigation, and over-the-air software updates.

Other standout features include automatic climate control, tyre-pressure monitoring, and the Parking Assist package.

The M135 further provides M Sports seats in Veganza leather/Alcantara upholstery with blue stitching, courtesy of the standard M Sport package.

This is on top of a heads-up display, ambient lighting, and driving assistance functions such as front-collision warning, lane-departure warning, exit warning, traffic sign recognition, and a Parking and Reversing Assistant.
