2 luxury cars coming back to South Africa

Italian luxury automaker Alfa Romeo has announced a return to South Africa for two of its high-performance models, but only for those who can afford to order them.

Both the Giulia and Stelvio, in their Quadrifoglio – or “four-leaf clover” – variants, will be back on sale after the brand decided to reopen orders for current generation models through 2027.

According to Alfa Romeo CEO, Santo Ficili, this was done to keep a promise the brand made to customers who “pay the most attention to the extreme performance and pure emotions inherent in Alfa Romeo’s DNA”.

“This is the best way to celebrate one of the most famous symbols in the automotive world, which brings with it a century-old quest for technical excellence applied to competitions and production cars,” he said.

“We’re confident that the Quadrifoglio will continue to inspire our future, as the most authentic expression of Alfa Romeo sportiness.”

Buyers of the Giulia Quadrifoglio can expect to fork out R2,039,900, while Stelvio buyers will need to pay R2,225,900. Both models come with Alfa Romeo’s standard 5-year/100,000km warranty and maintenance plan.

A symbol of racing pedigree

Both models are marked with the four-leaf clover, a symbol of Alfa Romeo’s racing pedigree that made its debut in 1923 when Ugo Sivocci won the Targa Florio in his Alfa Romeo RL featuring the symbol.

Since then, the Italian automaker has marked its highest-performance models with the Quadrifoglio, including exclusive road cars like the Giulia and Stelvio.

Styling on the two models drew inspiration from Alfa Romeo’s racing pedigree, blending tradition and innovation.

Each is fitted with ultra-light burnished wheels. The Giulia is fitted with 19-inch wheels, while the Stelvio sports 21-inch variants of the Alfa’s iconic 5-hole wheels, behind which are anodised grey brake callipers.

The Giulia is also fitted with a carbon-fibre rear spoiler to highlight its racing pedigree.

Buyers can choose from a range of liveries, including Rosso Etna, Verde Montreal, Blu Misano, Grigio Vesuvio, Nero Vulcano, and Rosso Alfa.

Inside, the racing feel is continued through “Racing Sparco” sports seats in leather and Alcantara with carbon-fibre detailing throughout the cabin.

Performance

The brand noted that the combination of the latest-generation technology with adrenaline-fueled performance offers a typically Alfa Romeo direct, engaging driving experience from both models.

Both Quadrifoglio models have been built using ultra-light materials such as aluminium for the engine and carbon fibre for their transmission shaft, bonnet, spoiler, side skirts, dashboard, and panels.

Under the bonnet, both the Giulia and Stelvio have been fitted with a 2.9-litre V6 petrol motor, capable of producing an incredible 375kW and 600Nm.

The Giulia features rear-wheel drive, while the Stelvio, which is an SUV, features all-wheel drive.

In its configuration, the Giulia can sprint from standstill to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds, topping out at 307km/h, while the Stelvio reaches 100km/h in 3.8 seconds and can do 285km/h.

To keep both models in check, they feature a mechanical limited-slip differential, optimising torque transfer and increasing stability, agility, and cornering speed.

In the Giulia, aerodynamics are ensured by a carbon-fibre front splitter, which, when activated, controls the air flow under the vehicle to increase stability and performance.

Its Akrapovič exhaust system also ensures that the Giulia sounds like a race car, even when not on the track.
