Lepas has announced that it will showcase the new L6 electric vehicle (EV) at the Festival of Motoring in South Africa this weekend.
The Chinese carmaker, which is one of several sub-brands under the Chery Group, launched in our market back in April with a single car, the L4 crossover.
This was followed up earlier this month with the larger L6 SUV, and Lepas is now gearing up to launch a fully-electric version that will serve as the flagship of the series.
Lepas confirmed that the L6 EV will feature at this year’s Festival of Motoring, which is being held at the Kyalami Raceway in Gauteng this week from Friday, 28 to Sunday, 30 August.
“The L4 marked the start of our journey in South Africa earlier this year, and the imminent launch of the L6 will take our local range another step forward,” said Letitia Herold, National Brand and Marketing Manager at Lepas South Africa.
“The L6 EV shows how we plan to build on that foundation by giving consumers more choice, not only between models but also between powertrains.”
“Different powertrains suit different customers, and our range needs to reflect that. As Lepas expands in South Africa, we want buyers to have more ways to find a vehicle that fits their needs.”
Another Chery brand, iCAUR, is also preparing to showcase two new cars at the festival, the V27, and the 03T REEV.
What to expect
Unlike the standard L6, which has a distinctive studded grille, along with “cat-like” LED headlights and lower fog lamps, the EV has a closed-off, minimalist front end, similar to most electric cars.
Its main selling point is obviously its powertrain, which takes the form of a single front-mounted electric motor that can generate 160kW and 275Nm.
This is paired with a large 67.08kWh battery, which affords a WLTP-rated range of up to 450km.
It supports both AC and DC charging, with a 6.6kWh onboard AC charger and a CCS Type 2 charging connection. A portable Type 2 charger will also be included as standard.
Owners will have access to three driving modes – Eco, Normal, and Sport – which will adjust the throttle response to prioritize efficiency, comfort, or sharper acceleration, respectively.
Lepas revealed that the L6 EV will feature 19-inch alloy wheels, and red brake calipers for an added sporty touch.
Inside, it has an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch infotainment screen, the latter of which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The SUV will also have an eight-speaker Sony stereo, a 50W wireless charger, voice commands, dual-zone climate control, multi-colour ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and a powered tailgate.
The front seats, which are wrapped in leatherette upholstery, are electronically adjustable and feature heating, ventilation, lumbar, and memory setting functions.
A full Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite is also included, with Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Emergency Lane Keeping, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.
Additionally, it features a 540-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, and a fully automatic parking assistant.
