The most fuel-efficient petrol cars in South Africa

Motorists in South Africa are conscious of fuel efficiency and tend to consider it one of the most important factors when buying a new car, especially in times when fuel prices become unpredictable.

Despite the long list of locally available new energy vehicle (NEV) options, including hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully-electric vehicle (EV) offerings, these are often more expensive than internal combustion vehicles (ICE).

This keeps buyers shopping in the petrol- or diesel-powered segment, where smaller vehicles offer both good economy and affordable price tags.

The best example of this is the Suzuki S-Presso, which is not only one of South Africa’s cheapest cars with a price tag of R192,900, but also one of its most efficient.

The S-Presso sports a 1.0-litre petrol motor, capable of producing 49kW and 89Nm, allowing for a frugal 4.4l/100km petrol consumption.

The unfortunate payoff for efficiency is that most of these cars are fitted with smaller, often underpowered, powertrains.

There are, of course, exceptions to this rule as well, with some more efficient cars in South Africa offering drivers decent power outputs, but these also come with a payoff.

Two models that offer drivers efficiency and reasonable power are the VW Polo Vivo GT and the Audi A1 Sportback, which fall well outside the budget category at R363,300 and R530,900, respectively.

However, the Vivo GT’s turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol motor is good for 81kW and 200Nm while maintaining an economy of 4.8l/100km.

Similarly, the A1 is also fitted with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and boasts identically frugal fuel consumption, although its power output is slightly boosted to 85kW and 200Nm.

South Africa’s most efficient models are the automatic derivatives of the Toyota Vitz and the Suzuki Celerio, which are essentially the same car.

These share the same naturally aspirated 1.0-litre petrol motor also found in the Suzuki S-Presso, yet these are slightly more economical at 4.2l/100km.

A fuel consumption under 6.0l/100km is considered very efficient for traditional ICE vehicles, yet the vehicles on this list boast fuel efficiencies of 5.0l/100km and below.

This makes these fuel-efficient petrol cars more economical to drive than many hybrid options.
