Best-selling bakkies and SUVs in South Africa

The bakkie is one of South Africa’s biggest vehicle segments by sales volume, while the SUV segment is the biggest by variety.

These body styles combined account for around half of the country’s new vehicle sales every month, while the rest are split between the remaining categories.

However, it does seem like there is more buying power behind bakkies in the local market – as the top 10 bakkies collectively sold 8,589 units in October 2021.

This is compared to the top 10 SUVs selling a significantly lower 6,718 units.

Additionally, crossovers are often classified as SUVs for sales reporting, and as a result the biggest chunk of the best-selling SUVs in South Africa comprise these “mini SUVs”.

Toyota is the biggest player in both the SUV and bakkie segments, with two vehicles found in each.

VW is also up there, with one bakkie and two SUVs finding their way onto the top 10 lists.
