Top-end VW Caddy Maxi – What you get for R600,000

The fifth-generation VW Caddy recently went on sale in South Africa in two body styles and three specifications.

At the top of the range sits the new Caddy Maxi, with a starting price of R600,400.

With seven seats and a modular setup to increase cargo capacity, the new MPV is perfectly tailored to meet a wide variety of family and business needs.

Comfortable and practical

The new range-topping VW Caddy Maxi is well-equipped with features to make it both comfortable and practical.

To enhance ease of use, the cargo carrier gets “Double Grid” fabric upholstery, a leather multifunction steering wheel, a small multi-information driver’s display, cruise control, LED headlights with daytime running lights, four USB interfaces, electrically-adjustable wing mirrors, an electronic parking brake, auto brake hold, a rear-view camera, and all-round parking sensors.

An 8.25-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard, too, and plays through a six-speaker sound system.

To then provide the practicality that is demanded from Caddy buyers, storage drawers under the front seats, roof rails, a trailer hitch, sliding rear doors, and modular seats are installed.

The latter allows owners to fold down or remove the second and third row of seats to expand total cargo capacity to 3.1m³ – which translates to a maximum load-carrying capacity of 3,105 litres or 592kg.

With only the seats at the back folded down, cargo capacity for the Caddy Maxi is still a respectable 446 litres.

A range of options can be fitted to the VW at an additional fee, too, including a panoramic glass sunroof, rear wing doors, park assist, and trailer assist.

Trailer assist “automatically manoeuvres the vehicle and trailer during parallel and reverse parking,” said VW.

In terms of safety, the fifth-generation Caddy scored the all-important five-star safety rating from the Euro NCAP.

Diesel power

This particular VW Caddy sports a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine that directs 81kW and 300Nm to the front wheels.

Power is handled by a six-speed manual transmission, while combined fuel consumption is a relatively low 5.5l/100km.

The torquey Caddy Maxi is capable of towing up to a maximum braked capacity of 1,400kg, as well as sprinting to 100km/h in 12.8 seconds.

Price

The new VW Caddy Maxi 2.0TDI has a South African starting price of R600,400.

Included in the price is a 3-year/120,000km warranty and a 3-year/60,000km service plan.
