Toyota Corolla prices in South Africa – 1992 vs 2021

A new Toyota Corolla with a 1.6-litre engine and an automatic gearbox sold for R57,000 in South Africa in 1992.

Today, the cheapest new Toyota Corolla you can buy locally is the 1.8 XS CVT model, which retails for R387,800.

There are several reasons the price has gone up over the past 29 years, one of which is inflation.

Prices of goods rise over time with demand, in combination with the purchasing power of currencies decreasing.

Another reason is that the cost to produce a car can increase as more technological and safety features are implemented, and the cost of labour goes up.

Price comparison

To take these factors into account, we have created two “Toyota Corolla” price comparison tables below.

The tables contain:

  • The 1992 price of a new Toyota Corolla in South Africa.
  • The price of that same car adjusted for inflation if it was to be sold “new” in 2021.
  • The price of the nearest new Toyota Corolla model available today.

We have split the data into two tables to allow for a distinction between the current Toyota Corolla, and the Toyota Corolla Quest.

This provides two comparison points, as the Corolla Quest is “less advanced” than the Corolla and therefore a slightly closer comparison to what Toyota offered in 1992.
