Most popular brands on South Africa’s used-car market

When it comes to passenger vehicles, the most popular brand in South Africa’s pre-owned market is VW, whereas in the light-commercial-vehicle (LCV) category, the local favourite is Toyota.

These insights were revealed in TransUnion’s latest third-quarter vehicle pricing index, which tracked the number of car deals that took place in the country between July and September 2022.

Pre-owned passenger cars

For the third quarter of 2022, VW was ahead in the pre-owned passenger-car segment with a 21% market share by sales volume, with Toyota hot on its heels with a slice of 19%.

Similar to the new-vehicle category, these two manufacturers are head and shoulders above the rest with the third-most-prominent automaker on the used market being Hyundai with a 10% share, nearly half that of Toyota.

Hyundai’s sub-brand Kia is next in line, securing itself 8%, with Renault coming in at 6%.

Compared to the first quarter of 2022, VW’s market share reflected a decrease of 4%, whereas Toyota’s is a result of a 2% increase.

Hyundai as well as Renault, however, kept their respective 10% and 6% shares throughout this period.

Ford, which has since discontinued the popular Figo and Fiesta, then fell out of the top-5 manufacturers on the used passenger-car market, being replaced by Kia.

Pre-owned LCVs

The used LCV segment, which includes bakkies and mini-buses, saw Toyota dominating 45% of the market in the third quarter of 2022.

Second place is Ford with 23%, followed by Nissan with 19%.

VW is a less prominent brand in the LCV sector, attaining 5% of the market in July through September, which is equal to Isuzu’s share over the same period.

In relation to the first quarter of 2022, all five manufacturers managed to stay in the top-5 most popular brands in the used LCV market.

Ford, however, was overtaken by Toyota, the latter of which experienced a huge 17% growth between the two periods, while the former saw its share shrinking by 6%.

Nissan gained 2% between the first and third quarters, whereas VW lost 2%. Isuzu, on the other hand, remained consistent at a 5% share throughout the year.

Favourite body styles

Complementing VW’s prominence in the pre-owned market is the fact that the most popular body style for car buyers in this segment was the hatchback, of which VW’s models including the Polo and Polo Vivo are among the best-selling in the country.

As usual, SUVs were highly popular, too, snapping up 29%, with sedans still grabbing a surprising 20% of the pre-owned market.

Coupes, multi-purpose vehicles, and crossovers each seized 2%, with the remainder of the body shapes on offer occupying 1%.
