Within two years on the market, the Toyota Urban Cruiser has managed to become the favourite choice of buyers in the crossover/SUV segment by selling more units than any of its peers through the first 11 months of 2022.
Another Toyota which has spent even less time on the automaker’s brochures, the Corolla Cross, also grabbed an impressive second place in the hearts of South Africans during this same time.
The locally-produced Cross, however, was firmly set to overtake its smaller imported sibling as the top-selling car, until Toyota’s Durban-based factory was hit by severe flooding in April that saw this model not being produced for around three months, consequently cutting its average sales for this period significantly.
Following the two Toyotas, VW’s T-Cross sat in third place by sales volume in 2022, with the Haval Jolion occupying fourth.
The last model to then surpass the 8,000-unit mark between January and November was the Renault Kiger, thus grabbing the fifth spot on the best-sellers list.
Sixth was again occupied by Toyota in the form of the sizeable Fortuner, whereas seventh went to the Urban Cruiser’s half-sibling, the Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
Hyundai’s entry-level Venue grabbed eighth place, Ford’s ever-lasting EcoSport came in at ninth, and tenth was taken by the stylish Nissan Magnite.
The graph below details the sales trends of South Africa’s best-selling crossovers and SUVs during the first 11 months of 2022.
