2022 – Bugatti’s best year ever

Ultra-premium automotive marque Bugatti delivered the greatest number of vehicles in a 12-month period in 2022 than ever before, with a grand total of 80 examples shipped to customers around the globe.

“As a result, more Bugatti hyper sports cars and more variants have been assembled in the Atelier at Molsheim than in any of the 17 years since it was first established,” said the automaker.

The deliveries included many noteworthy models, not least the 400th Chiron out of a production run of 500, the last Chiron and Chiron Sports for the European market, the final nine units of the Chiron Super Sport 300+, and all ten of the highly-limited Centodieci.

While this figure is dwarfed in comparison to other carmakers like Toyota, which sold 132,035 autos in South Africa alone over the same period, it’s highly impressive when considering that the most affordable Bugatti has a starting price in excess of R50 million and takes around six months to build.

A look back at Bugatti in 2022

Bugatti had a remarkable 2022, starting off the year with all the production slots for its Bolide, Chiron, and Mistral being assigned, thus putting the focus on ” the Bugatti ownership journey as well as meeting the growing needs of customers wishing to purchase a pre-owned Bugatti car,” said the French manufacturer.

This goal gave way to the introduction of the Bugatti Certified Pre-Owned Programme, making it possible for customers to purchase used Veyron and Chiron models from authorized dealers with factory-backed warranties.

Due to ever-increasing demand for more distinctive specifications, the “Sur Mesure” programme was also launched, giving patrons the opportunity to create their own individualistic designs that would not have been possible before.

“It has already yielded spectacular results, including an intricate ‘Vagues de Lumière’ paintwork that mimics the way lights reflect off Chiron Super Sport’s curved panels,” said Bugatti.

Concerning new model introductions, the automaker unveiled the W16 Mistral, the final road-going Bugatti powered by the legendary 16-cylinder, quad-turbocharged powerplant.

Good for a top speed of 420km/h and with a radical look, each and every one of the 99 Mistral examples were sold out before the car was even officially unveiled.

Moreover, Bugatti “further enriched its deep coachbuilding expertise” in 2022 by hand-assembling and delivering all 10 units of the highly-desirable Centodieci – a tribute to the iconic EB110 from the 1990s.

What lies ahead

With Bugatti and Rimac now operating under one banner, 2023 is shaping up to be a momentous year for the brand.

On 1 February, the one-of-a-kind Chiron Profilee will be auctioned in Paris, France, presenting a rare opportunity to secure one of the last W16-powered Bugattis to ever be built.

Production of the final 100 units of the standard Chiron will also continue as usual, and customers of the Mistral and Bolide will finally have the chance to configure their vehicles before they are put into production.

Bugatti will further “honour its rich motorsport heritage and its connection with the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” it said, though it remains to be seen what visual treats it will conjure up in celebration of this.

“Bugatti will continue to showcase the most advanced technologies; as the world evolves Bugatti will strive to remain at the pinnacle of true automobile performance, design, technology, and the finest craftsmanship,” said CEO Mate Rimac.

“Ettore Bugatti once said, ‘If comparable, it is no longer Bugatti.’ This vision is as true today as it ever has been, and we look forward to revealing more in the second half of 2023.”
