Best-selling cars in South Africa

2023 started on a positive note for South Africa’s new-vehicle sales, recording a 4.8% increase over the corresponding month in 2022 with a grand total of 43,509 vehicles delivered to new owners.

The Toyota Hilux held steadfast in first place owing to 2,769 sales of the bakkie, with a large proportion of these being double cabs.

As in December, second and third in January were occupied by Toyotas, too, this time around the Corolla Cross and Starlet, respectively, both cracking the 2,000-unit mark and sitting only five units apart in terms of their performance.

The Suzuki Swift’s 1,499 units saw it taking fourth, followed by the Isuzu D-Max in fifth with 1,273.

In its first full month on the market, the new Ford Ranger scored sixth place moving 1,269 examples in the first 31 days of 2023 after going on sale in the initial weeks of December.

Toyota’s Hiace walked away with the seventh spot after it moved 1,257 vehicles, with VW being responsible for both eighth and ninth with the Polo and Polo Vivo – the siblings recording 1,144 and 1,054 sales.

Nissan was another standout performer, the NP200’s 886 sales grabbing it tenth, while the Almera and Magnite also made it into the top 20 most popular vehicles for the month of January.

The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, Mahindra Pik Up, Haval Jolion, Renault Kwid, and Suzuki Baleno were among the top performers, too.
