The market for seven-seater SUVs seems insatiable in South Africa with a host of manufacturers introducing models that met this requirement in the last year.
Buyers after one of these large family carriers are in luck, as no fewer than 18 vehicles with a minimum of seven seats are sold in South Africa from a starting price of R379,900 all the way up to R1,962,457.
At the lower end of the spectrum sits Honda’s BR-V which blends the practicality of an MPV with the look of an SUV, followed by Mahindra with its recently-unveiled Scorpio-N. Chery also has a seven-seater product on offer under R500,000 in the form of the Tiggo 8 Pro.
On the other side, the BMW X7 is the priciest SUV in the country with more than five seats, sitting above the Mercedes-Benz GLE – the latter of which sees seven seats as an optional extra. Even with the option selected, the GLE would still be more affordable than the GLS which has seven seats as standard.
The country’s most-popular manufacturer, Toyota, also has a player in the segment namely the Fortuner, competing with the likes of Ford’s Everest and VW’s Tiguan Allspace.
