So long Kia Rio – Here are the hatchbacks that are still on the market

The Kia Rio is being discontinued in South Africa as the company ceased production of the hatchback for right-hand-drive countries.

The hatchback is the latest in a growing list of models that have been taken off the market in recent years, alongside other entries like the Ford Figo and Fiesta, Datsun Go, Nissan Micra, and Hyundai Atos.

For a starting price of R299,995, equipment offerings on the Rio comprised a multifunction steering wheel, automatic headlights, a 3.5-inch LCD driver display, manual air conditioning, and an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Local buyers further had the choice between two petrol engines in the form of a 1.2-litre producing 61kW and 120Nm, or a bigger 1.4-litre with 73kW and 135Nm.

Depending on the gearbox, a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic, fuel consumption ranged from 5.7 to 6.2l/100km.

South Africa’s hatchback market has taken a hit in recent years, but a few manufacturers have not yet given up on the segment.
