The crossover vehicle segment is as popular as ever in South Africa, as evidenced by Naamsa’s February new-vehicle sales report.
The compact SUV body type has seen growing interest in the last few years, with many people moving away from hatchbacks towards cars that are slightly larger yet retain an affordable price tag.
The one these buyers favoured the most in February was none other than the Toyota Corolla Cross, with more than 1,500 units finding new homes.
It was also the fourth best-selling car overall, only beaten out by the likes of three bakkies, which makes the Corolla Cross the country’s number one passenger vehicle.
Second place was taken by the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro with 962 units sold, once again illustrating what a smash hit the Chinese brand has become in South Africa in a relatively short space of time.
Third place, meanwhile, went to VW and its most affordable crossover – the T-Cross – which managed to get 889 units taken off the showroom floor.
Fourth place was taken by another Chinese brand with the Haval Jolion, which recently saw the addition of a new hybrid powertrain to the line-up, and managed to ship 737 units.
Finally, fifth place was occupied by the Renault Kiger, which was able to sell 714 units.
Other brands to crack the list of top-sellers include the likes of Kia, Nissan, Hyundai, Ford, and Suzuki, with popular entries like the Sonet, Magnite, Venue, EcoSport, and Vitara Brezza, respectively.
Speaking of the Vitara Brezza, South Africa will unfortunately be saying goodbye to it and its cousin – the Toyota Urban Cruiser – in the coming months, as their respective manufacturers will be replacing them with new models.
