SUVs taking on the R1.2-million Mercedes-Benz GLC

The new Mercedes-Benz GLC is arriving in South Africa soon and will be available in three specifications, with pricing starting at R1,214,408 for the entry-level model.

The specification in question is the GLC220d in the Avantgarde equipment line.

For this price, the SUV provides a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine combined with new 48V mild-hybrid technology designed to let the powertrain run more smoothly while also providing a 17kW boost for quicker starts off the line.

This setup, which generates 145kW and 440Nm, is paired to a nine-speed automatic which transmits power to the 4Matic all-wheel-drive layout, and the net result is a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 8.0 seconds and a top speed of 219km/h.

Fuel consumption, meanwhile, works out to a frugal 4.9l/100km thanks to its hybrid assistance.

The Mercedes also comes with Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual driving modes, and Agility Control dynamic suspension.

Standard equipment on the luxury vehicle comprises adaptive LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, electronically-adjustable and heated front seats, Artico leather upholstery, a multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, cruise control, keyless entry and start, blind-spot monitoring, two-zone climate control, eight speakers, an 11.9-inch infotainment screen, and a 12.3-inch digital driver display.
