When the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton is going on sale

Mitsubishi has revealed that the all-new Triton is planned to launch in “fiscal year 2023.”

Additionally, the company said it plans to run a prototype model of the bakkie under “Group T1 specifications” at the 2023 Asia Cross Country Rally in August.

As such, the new Triton is expected to make its debut at any time between August 2023 and the end of March 2024.

Mitsubishi confirmed that the 4×4 going on sale in Thailand first, after which it will be released in a staggered approach in the ASEAN region, Oceania, and then the rest of the world.

As a teaser, the Japanese carmaker is displaying the XRT Concept, “a concept car of the all-new Triton pickup truck”, at this year’s Bangkok International Motor Show being held from 21 March to 2 April.

This marks the sixth generation of the Triton to come to market and the first full redesign of the well-known bakkie in approximately nine years, said Mitsubishi.

Everything we know

Mitsubishi has thus far been tight-lipped about the upcoming Triton and next to no details about the vehicle are currently available to the public.

According to Australian motoring publication Which Car?, the new Mitsubishi bakkie will share its foundation with the Nissan Navara due to the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, with the interior and exterior styling expected to match up quite closely.

As such, the sixth-generation Triton is likely to grow in length and height as well as boast a longer wheelbase when compared to the existing model, while also featuring a more squared-off design.

This coincides with the “horizontally-themed styling” of the XRT Concept.

If other alliance-based bakkies are anything to go off – think Ford Ranger and VW Amarok; as well as Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 – the Triton and Navara could be sharing the same powerplants, too.

Currently, the Mitsubishi makes use of a 2.4-litre, turbo-diesel motor generating 133kW and 430Nm, while the Nissan puts out a higher 140kW and 450Nm from a 2.5-litre, turbo-diesel block.

As bakkies are generally not known to increase their outputs tremendously from generation to generation, the Navara’s power unit could serve as the perfect candidate for driving the next-gen Triton.

The Cross Country rally from 13-19 August 2023 is bound to give us more insights into what the new Mitsubishi will offer.
