Crossovers competing with the new Toyota Urban Cruiser

The new Toyota Urban Cruiser has gone on sale in South Africa at a starting price of R329,400.

The old model was one of the country’s best-selling vehicles, thanks in large part to its affordability.

While the new car has seen a considerable price jump of R46,200 over its predecessor, it’s still largely competing in the same segment against the equivalent models from rival manufacturers.

The Cruiser is still running on a 1.5-litre petrol engine with front-wheel drive – the result being an output of 77kW and 138Nm.

You also get the option of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, depending on the model chosen, though in either case the fuel consumption returns a reading of 6.1l/100km.

Equipment on the entry-level Xs consists of 17-inch steel rims, bi-halogen headlights, LED daytime running lights, keyless entry and start, automatic air conditioning, fabric seats, a multifunction steering wheel, rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, ABS, two speakers, and a 7-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The higher-spec Xr then adds cruise control, roof rails, alloy wheels, and two more speakers for a total of four.

Affordable crossovers

Note that while the Ford EcoSport is still on sale in South Africa, its production has been discontinued meaning it will soon disappear from showroom floors.
