Best-selling cars in South Africa

For what seems like the first time in decades, the Toyota Hilux has been dethroned as the best-selling car in South Africa by its biggest rival, the Ford Ranger.

During the month of April, the Hilux sold a total of 2,187 units in the country, a mere 14 units shy of the Ranger’s 2,201.

This performance was no doubt assisted by the recent launch of the next-generation Ranger Raptor as well as the Ranger Single and Super Cab models, which joined the Double Cabs that made their debut last year.

Toyota remains the overall best-selling brand, though, with five other models joining the Hilux among the top 20 best-performers from April.

Numbers one and two were the only vehicles that managed to find over 2,000 new owners last month, as third is taken up by the VW Polo Vivo which saw 1,510 sales.

In fourth sits the Toyota Corolla Cross with 1,281 sales, in fifth the Toyota Hiace with 1,267 sales, in sixth the Suzuki Swift with 1,190 sales, in seventh the Isuzu D-Max with 1,183 sales, and in eighth the Toyota Starlet – which was the last vehicle to smash the 1,000-unit barrier – with 1,098 sales.

Other staples found in the top 20 comprise the Nissan NP200, Hyundai Grand i10, VW Polo, Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, Toyota Fortuner, Haval Jolion, Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Agya, Mahindra Pik Up, VW T-Cross, Kia Sonet, and Nissan Magnite.
