Buying a new car is likely to be one of the most expensive purchases a person will make in their life after a house, and yet the majority of cars can see a rapid decline in their value after just a few years of use.
If you are planning to pick up a new set of wheels, it’s a smart move to do your research beforehand to see whether the model you’re looking at will hold its value reasonably well on the off-chance that you want to sell or replace it at a later stage for various reasons.
Cars that hold their value
The easiest way to determine whether a vehicle will fetch a good resale price is to look at which brands have a high consumer demand, according to AutoTrader.
A vehicle’s future value is directly tied to how much people are willing to spend on it, meaning a popular car that is desired by many people will have a much more secure value proposition than more obscure options.
We can look at AutoTrader’s Annual Car Industry Report for 2022 to see which automotive brands are most often searched for by local motorists:
- VW – 85,585,450 searches
- BMW – 82,899,017 searches
- Mercedes-Benz – 74,806,102 searches
- Toyota – 73,845,308 searches
- Audi – 45,804,258 searches
- Ford – 37,845,143 searches
- Land Rover – 20,854,863 searches
- Hyundai – 20,628,429 searches
- Nissan – 17,057,171 searches
- Porsche – 15,461,157 searches
Of these entries, it’s worth noting that VW, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Ford, and Nissan have manufacturing facilities in the country and extensive dealership networks, which back up their attractiveness.
The report also revealed which models were most sought-after in 2022, including:
- Toyota Hilux – 22,763,152 searches
- VW Golf – 21,353,924 searches
- VW Polo – 21,328,198 searches
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class – 18,523,219 searches
- BMW 3 Series – 17,360,695 searches
- Ford Ranger – 14,324,017 searches
- BMW 1 Series – 9,885,533 searches
- Toyota Fortuner – 7,896,121 searches
- VW Polo Vivo – 7,799,229 searches
- BMW X5 – 7,338,460 searches
Interestingly, while VW is the most searched-for brand overall, the Toyota Hilux is the single most popular vehicle that consumers are hoping to nab.
In fact, only five of the 10 most-demanded brands have individual models in the top 10, with VW and BMW claiming three spots each.
Finally, the report gave a breakdown of the 10 most frequently searched-for model variants, which are:
- VW Golf GTI – 5,195,255 searches
- VW Polo GTI – 4,541,573 searches
- VW Golf R – 4,157,458 searches
- VW Polo 1.0TSI – 2,833,739 searches
- Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 – 2,833,739 searches
- Mercedes-AMG C-Class C63 – 2,312,775 searches
- BMW 3 Series 320d – 1,898,604 searches
- Ford Ranger Wildtrak – 1,738,241 searches
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class C200 – 1,540,990 searches
- Toyota Hilux 3.0D-4D – 1,472,705 searches
Again we see VW come out on top with the high-performance versions of its hatchbacks being a huge draw for many customers.
Likewise, Mercedes’ AMG segment proved to be the more popular search result, and the Wildtrak was the Ranger of choice for many Ford enthusiasts.
The fact that so many people are interested in potentially owning any one of these vehicles means you are far more likely to get a great resale price for them than many other cars on the market.
