The R3.4-million BMW XM is a big hit in South Africa – September sales numbers

BMW made headlines earlier this year when it launched its first M original vehicle in 45 years, the new XM, which clocks in at a starting price of a cool R3.4 million, making it the second-most-expensive model sold by the company in South Africa behind the M8 Competition.

Even with this substantial asking price, Naamsa’s most recent vehicle sales report shows that local motorists with the means to do so are undeterred.

In September, the Munich-based automaker was able to sell a total of six units, working out to a combined retail value of over R20 million and positioning the XM above the i4, X2, iX, i7, 8 Series, and Z4 in terms of popularity in the domestic market.

Why the BMW XM costs over R3 million

The XM is a super SUV intended to jump on the growing popularity of similar models like the Lamborghini Urus, a trend that even the likes of Ferrari have been unable to resist with the recent unveiling of its first SUV, the Purosangue.

BMW’s contribution to the elite playground is powered by 4.4-litre, TwinPower Turbo, V8 petrol engine, which also has hybrid assistance thanks to a 25.7kWh battery and electric motor.

This gives it a staggering power cap of 480kW and 800Nm, which lets the otherwise bulky 2.7-tonne vehicle bolt from 0 to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds before reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h.

Its M credentials also lend it enhancements like active roll control and rear-wheel steering, and its hybrid underpinnings mean it can travel for up to 88km on nothing but electricity.

Performance is only half the story, however, as the XM’s competition meant the BMW team had to bring their A-game to the design and features of their new super SUV.

The interior boasts M-branded leather sports seats, ambient lighting, a curved dual display comprising a 12.3-inch driver’s display and a 14.9-inch infotainment system, a heads-up display, four-zone climate control, and a Harman/Kardon surround sound system.

This is on top of items you’d expect from a vehicle in this price range, like a wireless charger, a comprehensive suite of advanced assistance features, and a 3D camera system.

Finishing off the package is an exterior that boasts 21-inch alloy rims, an illuminated kidney grille, LED lights, and gold-coloured accents on the wheels and body panels that emphasize its flagship status.
