South Africans lucky enough to get their hands on the exclusive new Toyota Crown will need to pay a minimum of R2,800 on insurance every month, according to research done by TopAuto.
The Crown is the newest nameplate to join the carmaker’s local family, though it will only be made available in limited numbers, and South Africa’s allocation for 2023 has already sold out.
While not officially listed on the company’s website, we’ve uncovered that the crossover was offered to its buyers in a single trim from a starting price of R918,900, making it one of the most premium offerings in the manufacturer’s line-up.
It is the latest vehicle to come out of Toyota’s continued push towards hybrid powertrains, being equipped with a 2.5-litre petrol plant with a bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery similar to that seen in the RAV4 E-Four.
The battery powers an electric motor over the rear axle whose assistance gives the Crown an output of 175kW and fuel consumption of just 4.4l/100km.
As one of the most high-end nameplates in the manufacturer’s arsenal, it also comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, heated and ventilated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a digital instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system, onboard navigation, keyless entry and start, an electric tailgate, a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, a 360-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors.
Insurance costs
We used Hippo’s car insurance quote tool to find out what the monthly premiums on the new Toyota would be.
The calculations were based on an individual living in a metropolitan area like Johannesburg with no claims history who would be able to store their car in a locked garage at night.
The site was able to provide nine quotes for the Crown, which were as follows:
Insurer | Monthly payments |
---|---|
King Price | R2,819.29 |
Budget | R2,971.84 |
Auto & General | R3,089.43 |
Old Mutual | R3,104.99 |
1st for Women | R3,146.79 |
Dial Direct | R3,170.31 |
Iwyze | R3,204.22 |
Pineapple | R3,447.36 |
Virseker | R3,453.00 |
Note that car insurance is heavily dependent on factors like your age, location, and claims history, meaning your premiums could be higher or lower than this depending on your circumstances and chosen excess.
Hippo also provided the excess for each insurer, which are as follows:
Insurer | Excess claim |
---|---|
Iwyze | R6,250 |
Old Mutual | R6,250 |
Pineapple | R6,250 |
King Price | R6,500 |
1st for Women | R15,400 |
Auto & General | R15,400 |
Dial Direct | R15,400 |
Virseker | R15,400 |
Budget | R15,800 |
An excess is the amount that you are required to pay as a client when you are involved in a car accident and make a claim to your insurer. The higher the excess you choose, the lower your monthly insurance payment generally is.
