The new Toyota Crown is scheduled to go on sale in South Africa before the end of 2023 with its official pricing coming in at R918,900.
Only one trim of the new hybrid will be available according to our informants at Duoporta vehicle information specialists, with a high level of standard equipment and a peppy battery-motivated drivetrain to boot.
This marks the first time the Crown will be on sale in the country despite being a mainstay of Toyota’s Japanese catalogue since 1955.
Crown specifications
The Crown is fitted with a 2.5-litre, petrol-hybrid drivetrain featuring a “newly-developed bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery” similar to the RAV4 E-Four.
Consisting of a 2.5-litre petrol powerplant working in conjunction with an electric motor on each axle, the new crossover generates a total of 176kW with combined fuel usage working out to a low 4.4l/100km and top speed pegged at 180km/h.
Drive is then directed to all four wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and it also offers a pure-electric drive mode in which it doesn’t burn any petrol, as well as Eco, Sport, and Normal settings.
While the Crown’s full roster of nice-to-haves must still be announced, the crossover is expected to offer fitments such as heated, ventilated, and electric leather seats, dual-zone climate control, a digital instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone mirroring and navigation, keyless entry and start, an electronically-adjustable steering column, an electric tailgate, a sunroof, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
In addition, it will come with automatic LED lights with high-beam assist, rain-sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, a 360-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and seven airbags.
The Toyota four-door is also quite sizeable, measuring 4,980mm long, 1,840mm wide, and 1,540mm tall – and boasting 433 litres of cargo room in the boot.
Included in the price of the new Crown are a 3-year/100,000km vehicle warranty, an 8-year/195,000km battery warranty, and a 6-services/90,000km service plan.
