Bakkies continue to draw a big crowd in South Africa, even if the car industry as a whole is on a downturn with three consecutive months of declining sales.
The Toyota Hilux held firm as the country’s favourite light-commercial vehicle with an impressive 3,110 units sold in October, though this is a slight drop in comparison to September’s 3,249 units.
Ford experienced a much steeper drop off, however, as it dipped below the 2,000 mark with 1,853 Ranger units sold versus last month’s 2,314 units.
This was still enough to put the Blue Oval in second place ahead of Isuzu, whose D-Max sales experienced a decline from 1,639 units in September to 1,464 units in October.
The top three were the only models to break four digits in October, as even the highly-demanded Nissan NP200 was only able to secure 961 new customers.
Mahindra was the last manufacturer to make it into the top five thanks to its Pik Up range, though even this saw a month-on-month drop from 578 units to 565 units.
Tthe top five bakkies accounted for 6,953 units of October’s 45,455 total vehicle sales, roughly 15.3% of the market.
The Nissan Navara, VW Amarok, GWM P-Series, Toyota Land Cruiser, and GWM Steed were then able to land in the top 10 in the sixth to tenth spots, respectively.
