Audi is gearing up to launch a number of special-edition cars in South Africa based on its most popular models, all of which will arrive within the next year.
Among the various SUVs and sedans penciled in to be released in the country is the A4 Black Edition, which will arrive in early 2024 with only 100 units being made available to local consumers.
Despite its launch still being several weeks away, the German carmaker has confirmed that the limited-edition A4 will start at R900,000, rather than the R765,500 that the standard car retails for.
This is a difference of R135,000, but the Black Edition has a number of exclusive details that help to explain the contrast in price.
What the Black Edition offers
As the name would imply, Audi’s Black Edition models come standard with Black Styling Package that is usually sold as an optional extra – adding darkened accents to the grille, bumpers, wing mirrors, window surrounds, and badges, with tinted privacy glass and sunshades for the rear windows.
It also boasts more aggressive bumpers on the courtesy of the S Line package, a set of unique 19-inch alloy wheels, and Matrix LED adaptive headlights with complementing daytime running lights.
The limited-edition A4 also gets the S Line interior option, which spruces up the cabin with a gloss black finish on the various panels, a black headliner, electronically-adjustable Nappa leather sports seats with S logos, illuminated S-logo scuff plates, and stainless steel pedals.
On top of all these visual elements, the Black Edition units also get three-zone automatic climate control, a glass sunroof, Audi’s “virtual cockpit plus” driver display, a rearview camera, a wireless phone charger, and a storage box in the centre console with extra USB ports fitted for users sitting in the back.
All of this is in addition to the equipment already included on the base A4, which comprises cruise control, ambient lighting, front and rear parking sensors, eight speakers, rain-sensing wipers, and a leather multifunction steering wheel, with the main difference that the standard car has manually-adjustable seats covered in leatherette.
Since it is a limited-edition model and not an all-new vehicle, the Audi A4 Black Edition uses the same engine as the equivalent standard version, consisting of two petrol and one diesel powertrain.
All three options take the form of a 2.0-litre turbocharged drivetrain, which links to the front wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox.
The first drivetrain, the 35TFSI petrol, produces 110kW and 270Nm while averaging 6.1l/100km on a fuel run, and the 35TDI diesel generates 110kW and 320Nm while being the most frugal at 5.0l/100km.
The 40TFSI petrol, meanwhile, puts out 140kW and 320Nm and consumes an average of 6.3l/100km.
