The salary you need to earn to afford the limited-edition Omoda C5 GT

Motorists who are looking to buy the new Omoda C5 GT will need to earn at least R66,000 per month if they plan on using a finance solution, according to a calculation by TopAuto.

The GT is a limited-edition model of the new Chinese crossover with only 100 units set aside for South Africa, costing R80,000 more than the standard car to reach its tag of R589,000.

The flagship is differentiated by a number of cosmetic enhancements, including a lower front bumper, front and rear spoilers, an aerodynamic rear wing, T-shaped LED daytime running lights, matrix LED taillights, red brake calipers, gold 18-inch Sport alloy wheels, and gold accents across the body.

Buyers also have a choice of 13 different colour combinations with seven mono-tones, three mono-tones with red highlights, and three duo-tones.

Equipment-wise, the C5 comes with two 10.25-inch displays for the driver and infotainment systems, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a powered sunroof, an electric tailgate, keyless entry and start, multi-colour ambient lighting, electric Sports seats with ventilation, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, an eight-speaker Sony sound system, and a 50W wireless charger.

It also features adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and traffic-congestion assist.

Powering all of this is a 1.6-litre, turbocharged petrol engine with 145kW and 290Nm, which is paired with a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

The C5 GT is front-wheel drive, achieves an average fuel consumption of 6.8l/100km, and can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7.8 seconds.

What you need to earn

We can use the following formula to work out the monthly payments on the new Omoda:

  • Car price – R589,000
  • Payment term – 60 terms (5 years)
  • Interest – 11.75%
  • Deposit – 0%
  • Balloon – No balloon payment
  • Extras – No optional extras

According to this, buyers will need to pay at least R13,143 per month if they want to pick up the limited-edition model.

Financial experts then recommend that you do not spend more than 20% of your gross monthly salary on vehicle payments. This means you’ll need to earn at least R65,715 per month if you want to purchase the new C5 GT in South Africa.

Note that this figure does not account for insurance, fuel, and maintenance, which must all be factored into your budget.
