Best-selling bakkies in South Africa

December’s sales numbers are finally in, revealing that the Toyota Hilux was the best-selling bakkie in South Africa in the last month of 2023 moving a total of 2,858 units.

This puts it nearly 1,000 units ahead of the second-most-picked option – the Ford Ranger – which managed a still impressive sum of 1,936 units.

The Isuzu D-Max once again claimed third place and was, in fact, the only other vehicle to get over 1,000 sales in December at 1,023 units, as the Nissan NP200 in fourth only managed to crack 749 units.

Mahindra was the last brand to make it into the top five with its Pik Up claiming 473 new customers, and the VW Amarok, Nissan Navara, GWM P-Series, Toyota Land Cruiser, and JAC T-Series all placed in the top 10, with the important distinction that JAC only reports its sales as a whole which combines its T6, T8, and T9 options.

The Peugeot Landtrek had a good month nearly doubling its sales from November, and the GWM Steed, Mitsubishi Triton, Mahindra Bolero, and Jeep Gladiator all landed in the top 15.

In total, light-commercial vehicles sold 10,181 units in December, taking up roughly a quarter of the 40,329 new vehicles purchased over the holiday season.
