Chinese car brands are continuing to expand in South Africa, as there are at least 11 different models anticipated to release here in 2024.
The tip of Africa has seen the introduction of several new nameplates from Asia over the last few years, with the most recent example being BYD (Build Your Dreams) – a new-energy-vehicle company that is giving Tesla a run for its money in the push for greener transport.
The manufacturer made its debut last year with the Atto 3 crossover, but this will soon be bolstered by a second, more affordable option with the Dolphin hatchback, which is expected to compete with the country’s cheapest electric vehicle (EV) – the recently launched GWM Ora.
Other automakers are also getting in on the electrification race, as Chery is planning to launch plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of both the Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro SUVs, while bakkie company JAC is expected to launch both a PHEV and battery-electric (BEV) version of its flagship T9 double cab.
GWM’s plans for this year include the introduction of its Tank off-road brand with two new models – the Tank 300 and Tank 500 – as well as the new Shanhai Cannon bakkie.
The 300 was supposed to debut last year but was hit with stock delays and is now scheduled to arrive in the next few months, after which its larger 500 sibling will be brought to the market.
Omoda is bringing out its new C9 crossover, and a new brand – Jaecoo – is making its first appearance this year with both the J7 and J8 SUVs.
Lots to look forward to
These are all the Chinese cars that have been confirmed by their manufacturers to be arriving in South Africa this year, bearing in mind that a model’s release date could still be pushed back at short notice.
