The new BMW X2’s launch is right around the corner, having been announced all the way back in October 2023 with weeks of speculation and teasers going back even further.
The crossover coupe is set to arrive in South Africa this month, and its pricing and model line-up have already been revealed, showing that the X2 will ship with two derivatives.
This includes the sDrive18i M Sport and the full-fledged M35i which will start at R878,804 and R1,222,599, respectively.
What you get
Starting with their engines, the entry-level X2 is powered by a 1.5-litre, turbocharged petrol plant with 115kW and 230Nm, giving it a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 9.0 seconds and a top speed of 213km/h.
If you have your eyes on the flagship, you can expect a 2.0-litre, turbo-petrol block with 233kW and 400Nm which dramatically reduces its acceleration time down to 5.4 seconds while raising its speed cap to 250km/h.
Both cars use a seven-speed automatic gearbox, though the sDrive is front-wheel drive while the M35i uses an xDrive all-wheel-drive layout.
A Start/Stop function and a Proactive Driving Assistant which manages gear selections to improve efficiency are included as standard, and the FWD and AWD models achieve an average fuel economy of 6.7l/100km and 7.8l/100km, respectively.
Another standard addition is adaptive M suspension and an integrated braking system, and the car now has a longer wheelbase and reduced weight of roughly 1.5 tonnes – all of which help with improved comfort and handling over the previous generation.
On the design front, the coupe now features sporty bumpers, LED headlights, and alloy wheels that range from 19 to 21 inches in size, with the top-end version also getting an M rear spoiler and backlighting for the iconic kidney grille.
Open the doors, and the BMW offers black Veganza perforated leather upholstery, aluminium Hexacube finishes on several components, an M-specific leather multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, a floating armrest with an integrated control panel, front Sports seats, a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, keyless start, two-zone automatic climate control, cruise control with automatic braking, an electric tailgate, and a 10.7-inch iDrive infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and BMW Maps.
The automaker has also added assistance and safety items in the form of front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, hill-start assist, ABS with brake assist, and seven airbags.
Upgrading to the flagship M35i will then add Alcantara-wrapped panels inside the cabin, a Harman Kardon sound system, adaptive cruise control, and M Sport brakes
Each purchase comes with a 2-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan.
