Tata relaunches in South Africa with 4 new cars – Details

Tata has officially re-entered South Africa’s passenger car market with four new models that showcase the brand’s latest design language.

More specifically, the Indian carmaker’s initial lineup consists of the Tiago hatchback, the Punch crossover, the Curvv crossover coupe, and the Harrier midsize SUV.

Tata has provided a short breakdown of each car’s specifications, though unfortunately, the company has yet to disclose the official pricing for any of them.

Instead, this information will only be revealed at the beginning of September.

In the meantime, we can take a look at each of Tata’s new cars to get a sense of what’s in store.

Tata Tiago

The Tiago is the brand’s entry-level car, taking the form of a small hatchback with a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine.

This powerplant generates 63kW and 113Nm and can be paired with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automated manual transmission (AMT).

Tata stated that the Tiago will initially be offered with four variants, but that its future plans include an expansion of the model lineup.

Interestingly, the carmaker also said it wants to bring “alternative energy” powertrains to South Africa, meaning that a Tiago hybrid is on the cards as well.

Equipment on the hatchback includes ABS, corner stability control, a digital driver display, a cooled glovebox, a reverse camera, and either a 7.0-inch or 10.25-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, depending on the trim level.

Tata Punch

The Punch is a small crossover that happens to be India’s best-selling car from 2024.

The compact SUV is powered by the same 1.2-litre engine as the Tiago, giving it a total of 63kW and 113Nm.

Standard kit on the Punch includes ABS, corner stability control, cruise control, a 10.5-inch floating driver display, and a 7-inch infotainment screen with wireless smartphone connectivity.

Another selling point is the doors, which can open up to 90 degrees to make it easier to enter and load luggage.

Tata Curvv

One of the more premium options in Tata’s initial roster, the Curvv is a crossover coupe with a sleek roofline and an eye-catching front end that pairs a bold grille with a long LED daytime running light bar running between the headlamps.

It measures 4,308mm in length, and is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol block good for 88kW and 170Nm.

This can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

A few of the features mentioned thus far include a 7.0 or 10.25-inch infotainment screen, a digital instrument cluster, a 360-degree camera, blind spot detection, an voice-assisted panoramic sunroof, and customizable ambient lighting.

Tata Harrier

Last but not least is the Harrier, a family SUV that will serve as the carmaker’s flagship product.

The Harrier is 4,605mm in length, and runs on a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that develops 125kW and 350Nm.

Tata’s range-topping SUV comes with a 10.25-inch or 12.3-inch touchscreen, built-in Amazon Alexa Car2Home support, dual-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, a hands-free electric tailgate, terrain response modes, and Level 2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems).
