New 1,400km Chery hybrid SUV goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and specifications

Chery has finally taken the covers off the Tiggo 9 – the carmaker’s new flagship SUV.

The Tiggo 9 is the newest addition to the Chery family in South Africa, placing above the Tiggo 4, Tiggo Cross, Tiggo 7, and Tiggo 8.

It’s also the latest model to showcase the brand’s CSH (Chery Super Hybrid) technology, continuing an electrified offensive that started earlier this year with the launch of the Tiggo Cross CSH, Tiggo 7 CSH, and Tiggo 8 CSH.

The new Tiggo 9 is available in four specifications, and prices start at R689,900.

Engines

The range kicks off with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine – the same one used by the Tiggo 8 Pro Max.

This block generates a total of 187kW and 390Nm, which makes it way down to either the front or all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The front-wheel-drive (FWD) “Pinnacle” variant has an average fuel consumption of 7.9l/100km, while the all-wheel-drive “Vanguard” consumes slightly more at 8.3l/100km.

Alternatively, buyers can opt for the CSH – a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that pairs a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol mill with one or more electric motors.

The FWD hybrid features a single e-motor that raises the vehicle’s total output to 165kW and 390Nm.

Power is supplied by an 18.3kWh battery, which affords an all-electric driving range of 90km.

Taking things one step further is the AWD Vanguard CSH, which has an e-motor over both axles.

As a result, the flagship puts out a staggering 455kW and 920Nm, making it by far and away the most powerful Chery in South Africa.

The Vanguard also has a larger 34.4kWh battery, which increases its electric range to 160km.

The automaker claims that the CSH units can consume as little as 1.4l/100km, provided you make extensive use of the electric mode, but this increases to around 5.5l/100km when the combustion engine is employed more frequently.

Chery also states that the CSH has a combined driving range of up to 1,400km.

Features

The Tiggo 9 measures 4,810mm in length, 1,925mm in width, and 1,741mm in height, making it slightly larger than the Tiggo 8 in every dimension.

It follows the same design language as its siblings, with a large studded grille, automatic LED headlights and daytime running lights, a full-width LED taillight bar, a panoramic sunroof, and a set of 19 or 20-inch alloy wheels, depending on the trim level.

The Pinnacle units come standard with seven seats wrapped in artificial leather, wood grain trim, a leather multifunction steering wheel, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, front and rear USB ports, ambient lighting, an eight-speaker Sony stereo, a six-way electronically adjustable driver’s chair, heated front seats, and ventilated second-row seats.

On the dashboard, you’ll find a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and voice commands.

On top of this, the Vanguard models are equipped with massage front seats, genuine leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, and an expanded 14-speaker Sony sound system.
