The new Volvo ES90 is scheduled to appear in South Africa in 2026.
The ES90 is the Swedish brand’s latest electric vehicle (EV), featuring the same level of technology seen on the EX90 SUV, with which it shares a platform.
Production on the luxury sedan began last month in preparation for the a European release, though South Africa is set to receive it soon after in early 2026.
“With production of the ES90 now underway, we’re moving from concept to reality,” said Grant Locke, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa.
“This isn’t just another electric Volvo; it’s our most advanced sedan yet, built with 800-volt charging, next-generation safety, and a design that redefines what premium electric mobility looks like.
“The ES90 shows where Volvo is headed—and in 2026, South Africa will see that vision on its roads.”
What to expect

Most of the ES90’s local specifications will only be revealed closer to launch, but Volvo has already disclosed its powertrain details.
The base option is a Single Motor derivative that sends a healthy 245kW and 480Nm down to the rear wheels, letting it accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a brisk 6.9 seconds.
It is equipped with a 92kWh battery, which provides a WLTP driving range of 650km.
One step up from this is the Twin Motor option, which gains a second power source over the front axle.
The dual drivetrain gives the sedan a total of 330kW and 670Nm to play with, leading to a faster 0-100km/h time of 5.5 seconds.
This version also has a larger 102kWh battery, which increases the range to roughly 700km.
Last but certainly not least is the Twin Motor Performance flagship, which is uprated to produce an impressive 500kW and 870Nm – enough to sprint to 100km/h in under 4.0 seconds.
As for its equipment sheet, the ES90 is expected to have a similar brochure to the EX90, including its standout LiDAR system.
Located on the roof, the LiDAR sensor emits a high-precision laser to create a 3D map of the car’s surroundings, letting it identity upcoming objects and hazards like unmarked objects, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Other features the sedan is expected to have include a 9-inch digital driver display, a 14.5-inch portrait infotainment screen, a wireless phone charger, a Bowers & Wilkens stereo, automatic climate control, and driving aids like a 360-degree camera, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot detection.
