Leapmotor has finally gone on sale in South Africa.
The Chinese automaker has officially launched its first product – the C10 SUV – which is available in two specifications with prices starting at R759,900.
One thing that makes Leapmotor distinct from other Chinese car brands that have set up shop in our market is that it is has a joint venture with Stellantis, the parent company behind several marques like Opel, Peugeot, Citroen, Jeep, and Alfa Romeo.
As a result, Leapmotor’s vehicles will be sold via the Stellantis dealership network in South Africa.
Powertrain

The C10 is a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV), which means it features both a rear-mounted electric motor and a 1.5-litre petrol engine.
The combustion engine does not power the wheels directly; instead, it acts as a generator to charge a 28.4kWh battery that connects to the e-motor, which produces 158kW and 320Nm.
On its own, the battery gives the SUV a range of 145km, but this increases all the way to 970km thanks to the ‘generator.’
You’ll still have to top up the engine with petrol, but it achieves a rather frugal consumption of 5.5l/100km.
Likewise, the battery can be charged directly using the 6.6kWh onboard charger, which takes approximately five hours.
Alternatively, you can use a 65kW DC fast charger, which will top the cells up to 80% in just 18 minutes.
Features

The C10 is available in two trim levels in South Africa: the Style and the Design.
The ‘entry-level’ Style comes standard with automatic LED headlights and daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, auto-folding side mirrors, keyless entry and start, artificial leather upholstery, electric front seats, a leather multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a wireless phone charger, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, and a 14.6-inch floating infotainment screen.
Anyone who buys the top-spec Design can also expect a panoramic sunroof, larger 20-inch alloys, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, an electric tailgate, and a 12-speaker stereo.
Leapmotor has also given the SUV a number of driving aids such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, tyre pressure monitoring, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and seven airbags.
